Welcome to Mayfair

Mayfair is a neighborhood named after a grocery store — and that origin says a lot about it. In the 1950s one of Denver's first shopping centers opened here, anchored by a new chain called King Soopers, and the center's name spread to the surrounding blocks. The land east of Colorado Boulevard had been platted back in 1885 by the Montclair Town and Improvement Company, but Mayfair's own identity is postwar and resident-made: Mayfair Neighbors Inc. organized in 1977, now covering more than 3,200 households between Colfax, Eudora, Monaco Street Parkway, and 6th Avenue Parkway. Two of those three non-Colfax boundaries are City Beautiful parkways listed on the National Register: 6th Avenue Parkway, built in 1909, and Monaco Street Parkway, laid out by S.R. DeBoer in 1907.

What Defines a Mayfair Home

  • Modest postwar houses, actively being reworked. Single-story homes from the years after the war are the dominant fabric, and larger replacements and expansions have been moving east across the neighborhood.
  • No design review. Mayfair has no historic district, local or national, which means no landmark approval standing between an owner and a renovation — unusual for an east-side neighborhood of this vintage.
  • Tudor Revival in the mix. Half-timbering and arched doorways show up here alongside the ranches, foursquares, and cottages.
  • Protected green edges. Two 1986-listed parkways frame the neighborhood with planted medians and mature trees, and sidewalks run throughout — something residents point out that many Denver neighborhoods lack.

Living in Mayfair

Mayfair Park at 10th and Jersey is the gathering place, and the neighborhood keeps a genuinely full calendar around it: an Easter egg hunt, a summer concert in the park, a biannual shred-a-thon, a community garage sale, and the Taste of Mayfair on the 900 block of Jersey Street. Commercial life runs along East Colfax, organized since 2014 by the Colfax Mayfair Business Improvement District — Marczyk Fine Foods, The Abbey Tavern, Abyssinia, and longtime fixtures like Ed Moore Florist. The King Soopers on Krameria is the direct descendant of the center that named the place, and the mid-century Mayfair Center nearby is being renovated rather than replaced. Palmer Elementary is on Grape Street; Hill Campus of Arts and Sciences and Graland Country Day are both close.
