Welcome to Lowry

Lowry Air Force Base went operational in 1938, trained more than a million service members, served as the temporary home of the U.S. Air Force Academy from 1955 to 1958, and hosted President Eisenhower's summer White House. It closed in September 1994, and what replaced it is one of the more deliberate pieces of city-building in Denver: a New Urbanist neighborhood planned from scratch, built out between 1998 and 2009, with the final phase at Boulevard One finishing in 2022. Thirty original base buildings were kept. New construction borrowed the base's own vocabulary — blonde brick, barrel roofs that echo hangar profiles — and the streets and parks kept the aviation names. Rampart Way, Academy Boulevard, Liberator Park, Mustang Park, Tailwind Park.

What Defines a Lowry Home

• All of it is new, and that shapes the market. Housing here dates from 1998 onward, so unlike Wash Park or Cherry Creek, teardowns and vintage-systems surprises simply aren't part of the conversation.
• Genuine variety of housing type. Roughly 4,500 to 5,600 homes spanning single-family, duplex, rowhome, condominium, and apartment, with affordable units built in from the start.
• Military architecture left standing. Two Denver landmark districts — Officers' Row and the Technical Training Center, both designated 1995 — plus National Register listings including the 1941 chapel.
• Park-rich by plan. More than 800 acres of parks and open space across the former base, including Great Lawn Park, Crescent Park, the Lowry Sports Complex, and a dog park.

Living in Lowry

The best of Lowry's reuse is its dining. Hangar 2, built in 1939 with twelve six-ton doors spanning 250 feet and its original rooftop control tower still in place, now holds a dining district and the Lowry Beer Garden, with communal seating for several hundred. Big Bear Ice Arena occupies the former Black Hangar. Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum fills Hangar 1 with roughly fifty aircraft. Everyday needs are covered by Lowry Town Center and, at Boulevard One, a Clark's Market and a small-format Target. Lowry Elementary is the neighborhood public school, and Stanley British Primary and The Logan School are both on the former base.
